Following our panel debate, Later life lending is dead. Or is it?, we sat down with Dan Payne, COO at L&C Mortgages, to continue the conversation and explore some of the themes raised during the discussion.
One point stood out in particular: people don't fit neatly into categories.
It's easy to make assumptions based on age, employment status or where someone is in life. But those labels rarely tell the full story. Every client has their own goals, circumstances and priorities, and understanding those is what good advice is all about.
As Dan explains, advisers play a key role in helping clients navigate their options. That starts with taking the time to understand what someone is trying to achieve, rather than focusing on which box they appear to fit into.
The challenge, however, is that advisers can only discuss the solutions they're familiar with. If knowledge is limited to mainstream products, conversations can naturally become limited too. That's where education becomes so important.
The mortgage market has evolved significantly over the years, with a growing range of products designed to support people with more complex circumstances. Yet awareness and understanding of those options can still vary across the industry.
Dan believes there is an opportunity to bridge that gap through better education and smarter use of technology. Together, they can help advisers broaden their knowledge, have more informed conversations and ultimately deliver better outcomes for clients.
It's a reminder that the most valuable mortgage advice doesn't start with a product. It starts with a person.
When advisers take a holistic view of a client's situation, they are better placed to identify solutions that genuinely meet their needs, whether those solutions sit within the mainstream market or beyond it.
As the needs of borrowers continue to evolve, so too must the way the industry approaches advice. Education, technology and a willingness to look beyond assumptions all have a role to play in making sure more people can access the support and solutions that are right for them.

The later life lending market doesn’t need another conversation about whether things should change. The real question is how we start making that change happen.

Following our Living More debate at the RSA, Steph Charman, Chief Executive of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, joins us to discuss what needs to change across later life lending.

In this episode of Living More, Dan Payne, COO of L&C Mortgages, shares his key takeaways from LiveMore's RSA panel discussion, discussing the role of education and technology in delivering more holistic advice, the importance of understanding customer circumstances, and the future of the mortgage industry.
